Notes: One and a half hours of Amélie-free kickassery which caught the audience by surprise, expecting to see more of a soundtracky Yann. The show featured several new songs, like many of Yann's shows this year. I'd trade the Amélie Yann for the post-rocking Yann any day, granted that seeing a different type of show would also be pretty interesting. Truth is, I heard a lot people complaining on my way out of the venue. Well, boo hoo... do some research before committing to buy a ticket for a show of an artist you have no idea how it sounds live. The real problem is they were filling seats of a sold-out show which could otherwise be occupied by real fans. Nevermind talking from start to finish, some even dared to leave before the middle of the show, passing in front of the stage when the band was right in the middle of a song. That's the kind of open-mindness and respect many "music fans" have here in this country, and it's not the first time I point out that a big fat slice of portuguese crowds are only present at gigs to listen to the artists hit singles and a bunch of "abrigados", instead of staying home watching football like most of the time. And I guess this will continue for as long as being in a paid gig of an international artist is considered hip. I realize many that were there ended up enjoying the amazing show Yann and his band put on, but I just can't help getting annoyed by the usual quota of ticket holders who don't give a shit about the group of people that are on stage playing their asses off for their entertainment sake. I got to meet Yann and the band afterwards (super nice guys, by the way), and he and a couple of band members loved the Mogwai t-shirt I was wearing. That should tell you something about live Yann.

The sound was nothing to write home about. The soundman struggled with the bass since the very beginning, and the recording reflects that, with parts that are very bass heavy and others where it's almost completely out of the mix, making it very difficult for me to find an appropriate treatment for the bass in post when this happens so many times throughout the show. I fixed some of the most flagrant bass boosts and drops I could detect. The drums (toms especially) were also constantly and drastically manipulated during the show, sometimes during the songs and not in a discrete way. The delayed reinforcement PA in the back was way noticeable in the front, making my brain hurt and slightly present in the capture. The hall where the show took place is very reverberant and muddy, and it's for me the most negative factor on the final capture. There isn't many Yann tapes going around, and I bet this is far from one of the worst. It's possible that I mistracked the show, a lot of the show's setlist does not correspond at all with how I remember the original songs (A Secret Place was stunning), and there's a lot of new songs that I've never heard before. But at least I stayed until the end...
