I was browsing my collection and came across this very early show from U2 during their debut tour outside UK.

All existing copies finish with Electric Co which is only a fragment as well as A Day Without Me. But I had more music on my tape. Even the official U2 site does not list any more songs played on that show.

So it was very unlikely that I had a more complete version than the one is circulating. But infact I think I do have a longer version. Also, this is sourced from the same version that is circulating, which means that the taper or somebody who got the whole thing did not share it extensively and preferred to cut it out after Electric Co.

Here is some evidence why I think that tracks 8-11 do belong to Groningen:

- no set from october 1980 tour is 20 minutes long, where it is more likely to clock about 35-40 minutes
- at the beginning of track 10, Bono mentions two shows they just played: one at the Amsterdam Melkweg ("some people were sleeping there" - he mentions) and the other the radio show at KRO. He even asks the audience if they listened to it and liked it. These shows took place the day before and two days before Groningen
- these tracks do have the same sound quality and "mood" as the remaining tracks. Also the comments seem to come from the same show
- the only other dutch show happened the day after in Apeldoorn, where the setlist is reported slight different from this one

Also, we can there understand why some of the tracks are available in incomplete form and the encore of 11 o clock has a big gap in the middle. It is very likely that the taper was saving his batteries either to capture as much as possible of the U2 show, or for the main act. Infact, during tracks 8 & 9 you can hear some minimal deterioration of the sound, a bit saturated (nothing bothering, though), as a typical effect of batteries starting to lose energy.

Of course I am not 120% of my theory and always available to get corrections or feedbacks from the U2 guru´s!

Enjoy some missing parts from the U2 (early) history!
